Teriflunomide

Teriflunomide is an oral, once-daily immunomodulatory medication used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults and children aged 10 years and older

Mechanism of Action: Teriflunomide is the active metabolite of leflunomide, a drug used for rheumatoid arthritis. It works by inhibiting a specific mitochondrial enzyme (dihydroorotate dehydrogenase) needed for de novo pyrimidine synthesis in rapidly dividing immune cells (T and B cells). This action reduces inflammation and nerve damage in the central nervous system without significantly compromising the body’s overall immune competence.
