2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol (DCBA) is an over-the-counter mild antiseptic and mild local anesthetic. It is widely used globally in throat lozenges and oral sprays to soothe sore throats, minor mouth infections, and reduce mouth/throat irritation.
Mechanism: It functions by altering the tertiary structure of proteins in harmful bacteria and viruses, destroying the pathogens. It also acts as a local anesthetic by blocking sodium channels to provide quick pain relief.
