Testosterone Undecanoate BP
Testosterone Undecanoate (TU) is a long-acting testosterone ester used for hormone replacement in hypogonadal men, available orally or via injection, but carries risks, notably increasing blood pressure (BP)
Function: It’s a form of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) that slowly releases testosterone to treat symptoms of testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism).
Blood Pressure (BP) Risk: A major warning is its potential to significantly increase BP, raising cardiovascular risk, necessitating baseline and ongoing BP monitoring.
Cardiovascular Monitoring: Doctors monitor patients closely for hypertension, potentially adding or adjusting BP meds, or stopping treatment if BP can’t be controlled.
Prolactin Levels: Oral forms can raise prolactin, leading to gynecomastia (breast growth), nipple discharge, and sexual dysfunction; prolactin levels are checked.
Formulations: Oral capsules and long-acting injections are available, each with specific dosing and administration needs.
Contraindications: Not for men with prostate cancer, liver tumors, or severe hypersensitivity; use in women and children is not recommended.
